The Power of Asking Better Questions
Good strategy rarely begins with answers. It begins with curiosity.
"Good strategy rarely begins with answers. It begins with curiosity."
In the world of management consulting, there is a common expectation that experts arrive with answers. We are hired for our experience, our frameworks, and our ability to solve problems quickly. But over 18 years of advising organizations, I’ve found that the most impactful strategies don’t start with a solution—they start with the humility to ask better questions.
The Trap of the Quick Fix
It’s tempting to jump straight to the "how." How do we grow? How do we fix this partnership? How do we enter this new market? However, when we lead with answers, we often solve for the symptoms rather than the root cause. Asking "Why are we doing this?" or "What are we actually trying to protect?" often reveals a completely different strategic path.
Learning from Indigenous Wisdom
One of the greatest teachers in my career has been the time spent working with Indigenous communities. In these contexts, listening is not just a polite gesture—it is the foundation of the relationship. Elders and community leaders have taught me that before a partnership can flourish, there must be a shared understanding of history, values, and intent. This requires asking questions that go beyond the balance sheet.
The Power of Curiosity in Leadership
Curiosity is a leadership superpower. Leaders who are willing to say "I don't know, let's explore that" create a culture of safety and innovation. When we stop trying to be the smartest person in the room, we open the door for more diverse perspectives to emerge. This is where sustainable growth is found—not in the echo chamber of our own assumptions, but in the collaborative space of collective inquiry.
